Gary Burton是60年代最出色的顫音琴手，他可以手持四肢打擊棒來敲打樂器，他的演奏讓人會以為彷彿有兩三個人在演奏。但是他是一位不搶鋒頭的人，他願意把別人襯托的很好，他也不斷提供出極佳的音樂創意。 他是自學而成的顫音琴手，首次的錄音合作是與鄉村音樂的吉他手Hank Garland（1960年），1961年是鋼琴手George Shearing的五重奏的一員。
1964-66年之間他與薩克斯風手Stan Getz一起合作的四重奏讓他真正受到注意，1967年與吉他手Larry Coryell一起組成融合爵士樂樂團，此外一些重要的樂手還有Sam Brown、Mick Goodrick、John Scofield、Jerry Hahn與Pat Metheny。
Gary Burton經常以二重奏的組合推出作品，這些與他合作製作二重奏專輯的樂手有鋼琴手Chick Corea（他們也經常有現場的巡迴演奏）、Ralph Towner、Steve Swallow、Paul Bley、小提琴手Stephane Grappelli與鋼琴手Keith Jarrett。1971年開始，他也參與著名的柏克來音樂學院的教育工作，並且持續教學到現在。 90年代初期與豎笛樂手Eddie Daniels共組樂團，製作以紀念Benny Goodman與Lionel Hampton的音樂的紀念性質的專輯，並有許多場的現場演奏。
